Buying a used car from a dealer in Châteauguay
The rules that protect buyers in Quebec, in short.
- A licensed dealer. Every road vehicle dealer in Quebec needs a licence from the Office de la protection du consommateur. The dealer must display it, and its number goes on your contract (OPC).
- The advertised price includes every fee. Dealers can't add mandatory fees to the advertised price. Only GST (5%), QST (9.975%) and the $4.50 environmental fee on each new tire can be added (OPC, Revenu Québec).
- A label on every used car. It shows the year, serial number (VIN), mileage, the warranty and the repairs made since the dealer got the car. You can also ask for the previous owner's name and phone number (OPC).
- Test drive and inspection. The dealer must accept your request to test drive the car or have it inspected. If they refuse, walk away (OPC).
- Make sure it's paid off. A search of the car's serial number in the RDPRM register shows whether it still carries a debt, so you never pay off someone else's loan (RDPRM, OPC).
- Winter tires. Mandatory from December 1 to March 15 on vehicles registered in Quebec (SAAQ).
The working-order warranty in Quebec
Dealers must guarantee that a used car works, for a period based on its age and mileage.

| B | 5 years or less, up to 100,000 km | 3 months or 5,000 km |
| C | 7 years or less, up to 120,000 km | 1 month or 1,700 km |
| D | Over 7 years or over 120,000 km | None |
Contracts signed since April 5, 2024, whichever limit comes first. Legal warranties apply in every case (OPC).

Frequently asked questions
Does Drive Good sell these vehicles?
No. Drive Good Marketplace shows vehicles for sale by dealers. Each listing names the dealer selling the vehicle, and you deal with them directly.
Are the prices before taxes?
Yes. In Quebec, a dealer's advertised price must include every mandatory fee. Only GST, QST and the $4.50 environmental fee on each new tire can be added.
Does a used car come with a warranty?
Yes, based on its age and mileage: from 6 months or 10,000 km (category A) down to no working-order warranty for cars over 7 years old or 120,000 km (category D). Legal warranties apply in every case.
How do I know the car is paid off?
Search its serial number (VIN) in the RDPRM register. The search has a fee and shows whether a creditor holds rights on the car.
Can I test drive it or have it inspected?
Yes. Contact the dealer from the listing. In Quebec, the dealer must accept a test drive or an inspection request.
