Buying a used car from a dealer in Toronto

The rules that protect buyers in Ontario, in short.

  • A registered dealer. Buy from a registered used vehicle dealer. When you do, you don't need the Used Vehicle Information Package that private sellers must provide (Ontario.ca).
  • All-in price. The advertised price must include every fee the dealer intends to charge, except HST (13%) and licensing (OMVIC, CRA).
  • Safety Standards Certificate. You need one to put plates on a used vehicle. It's issued after an inspection at a DriveON centre licensed by the Ministry of Transportation (Ontario.ca). Ask whether the vehicle is sold certified.
  • Inspection. Have a mechanic check the vehicle before you buy, and ask for the service records.
