Facebook Marketplace or Facebook ads: what should car dealers use?
Updated October 2026
In short: use both. Marketplace puts your vehicles where buyers already shop, at the cost of time. Facebook and Instagram ads, including Meta's Automotive Inventory Ads, reach buyers who aren't searching yet and send them to your vehicles. Together they cover buyers at every stage.
What Marketplace does
Facebook Marketplace is where many local buyers browse vehicles, often on their phone in the evening. A complete listing with the real price, real photos and a video gets messages from people actively shopping.
- Cost: time. Writing, photographing, renewing and answering takes hours every week.
- Strength: buyers who are already shopping.
- Limit: since January 30, 2023, dealership business Pages can't create vehicle listings on Marketplace (CBT News). Read: Can dealers post on Facebook Marketplace?
What Facebook and Instagram ads do
Ads reach people on Facebook and Instagram, including Marketplace, based on where they live and what they're interested in. Meta's Automotive Inventory Ads show each vehicle with its photo and price to people shopping for one (Meta).
- Cost: ad budget, plus the time to build and manage the campaigns.
- Strength: reach beyond the people who are already searching, with your Page's name on every ad.
- Limit: ads stop when the budget stops.

Why the best dealers use both
A buyer might see your ad on Instagram on Monday, find the same vehicle on Marketplace on Wednesday and message you on Thursday. Each channel makes the other work better. What matters is that every lead lands in the same list and gets an answer in minutes.
