How to follow up with car buyers who stop answering

By the Drive Good team · October 2026 · 4 min read

In short: most buyers who go quiet are still shopping. Follow up on day 1, day 3 and day 7, each time with something new and useful, then stop politely. Keep it short, personal and easy to answer.

Why buyers go quiet

They're busy, they're comparing, they're waiting for a payday, or they found another vehicle and forgot to say so. Silence rarely means no. A good follow-up brings back the buyers who are still shopping without bothering the ones who aren't.

The simple follow-up plan

When Channel Goal
Day 1 Text Answer anything left open and offer a time
Day 3 Email Share something new: a video, a similar vehicle
Day 7 Text Ask one easy question, then let them go

What to say

Day 1, text: "Hi Sarah, it's Alex from the dealership. The RAV4 is still here and I can have it ready for a test drive tomorrow after 5. Would that work?"

Day 3, email: "Hi Sarah, here's a short video of the RAV4 so you can see the inside. We also just got a similar one with lower mileage, if you'd like to compare. Alex"

Day 7, text: "Hi Sarah, are you still looking for an SUV, or should I stop sending you updates? Either answer is fine!"

The last message often gets the most answers, because it's easy to reply to.

Rules that make follow-up work

  • One message, one question. Easy to read, easy to answer.
  • Something new every time. A video, a photo, an answer, a similar vehicle.
  • The buyer's language. Write in the language they wrote in.
  • Respect the no. If they say they bought elsewhere, thank them and stop.
  • Respect the rules. Follow anti-spam rules for texts and emails, like Canada's CASL and, in the US, the rules on texting consumers.

Frequently asked questions

How many times should I follow up?
Three times over a week usually works well. After that, keep the lead and check in only when you have something new.
Text or email?
Text for quick questions and times, email for videos and details. Use both.
Should I call?
If the buyer left a phone number and asked to be called, yes. Otherwise start with a text.
