How to write a vehicle description that sells (with examples)

By the Drive Good team · October 2026 · 3 min read

In short: start with the vehicle and its best reason to buy, then the key features, the honest condition and one clear next step. Short sentences, real facts, no all caps.

The 5-part formula

  1. The first line: year, make, model, trim, mileage and what stands out.
  2. Why this one: one or two sentences on who it's perfect for.
  3. Key features: three to six that buyers actually search for.
  4. Condition and history: honest, with what's new and what's not perfect.
  5. The next step: message, call or visit, and where.

Example 1: a sedan

2020 Honda Civic EX, 74,000 km, one owner.

Easy on gas and easy to park: a great daily driver. Sunroof, heated seats, backup camera, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

2.0L engine, automatic. Gray with a black interior. Two new front tires and full service records.

All fees included in the price, plus taxes. Message us to book a test drive at our dealership.

Example 2: a pickup

2019 Ford F-150 XLT SuperCrew 4x4, 98,000 km.

Ready for work and for the weekend: 2.7L EcoBoost V6, trailer tow package and a spray-in bedliner.

Remote start, backup camera, seats for five.

Inspected, with new brakes all around. Small scratch on the rear bumper (see photo 14).

All fees included in the price, plus taxes. Financing available. Send us a message or come see it at our dealership.

Example 3: a travel trailer

2018 Jayco Jay Flight bunkhouse travel trailer, 26 ft.

Room for the whole family: queen bed up front, bunks in the back and a slide-out dinette.

Power awning, outdoor shower, new battery. Stored indoors every winter.

Message us to book a visit, and ask us what it takes to tow it.

The examples show the format. Always describe the features and condition of your actual vehicle.

What to leave out

  • All caps, exclamation marks and slogans
  • "No lowballers" and "first come, first served"
  • Long lists of option codes
  • "$1," "call for price" or fees that aren't in the price
  • Claims you can't prove, like "best price in town"
  • Personal phone numbers

Adjust for each platform

Platform Length Tip
Facebook Marketplace 4 to 8 short lines Key facts in the first line
Your website Longer Add the full feature list and the history report
Facebook groups 2 to 4 lines Follow each group's rules and link to the listing
Instagram or TikTok caption 1 or 2 lines Year, make, model, one hook and your city

In French and Spanish

Write each language as its own text, not a word-for-word translation, and use the words local buyers use. In Quebec, your listings and website must be available in French (Éducaloi).

Frequently asked questions

How long should a vehicle description be?
On Marketplace, 4 to 8 short lines. On your website, as long as it takes to answer buyers' questions.
Should I put the price in the description?
Put it in the price field. Repeat it in the text only if you keep both up to date.
Can I use the same description on every vehicle?
No. Each vehicle needs its own. Copy-pasted text reads like spam and Meta can restrict accounts for repetitive content.
